Students in Gross Anatomy Lab

PT and Speech Path advance in national rankings

The latest graduate school rankings from U.S. News & World Report show Marquette programs are among the best in the country, and two College of Health Sciences programs made significant leaps in the magazine’s 2013 rankings. The doctoral physical therapy program is ranked 12th nationally, up from 19th, and the speech-language pathology program is ranked 62nd, up from 72nd. Read more.

New Neuroscience Symposium and continuing education

The Integrative Neuroscience Research Center will present the first Functional Neuroscience Symposium on Friday, July 20, 2012. The symposium features eight college faculty members presenting on neuroscience topics. The College of Health Sciences also offers a wide range of continuing education classes, including anatomical and neuroanatomical dissection, bioethics and imaging.

Professor and student win Fulbright Awards

Dr. Steven Long, associate professor of speech pathology and audiology, and Aaron Owen, a May 2012 biomedical sciences graduate, received Fulbright Awards for the upcoming year. Long will teach and work with the faculty and students of the Escuela de Fonoaudiologia (School of Speech Pathology) at the Universidad de Cordoba in Cordoba, Argentina. Owen will travel to El Salvador to research the dietary choices made by Salvadorans who have been exposed to differing degrees of modernization, quantifying the impact of globalization on the traditional food culture and its benefits and drawbacks to public health.

Professional Programs Alumni Reunion

The College of Health Sciences Association invites you to join Dr. William Cullinan, dean of the College of Health Sciences, and fellow alumni of the programs in physician assistant studies, physical therapy, and speech and language pathology, for the college’s first Professional Programs Alumni Reunion. A wine and cheese reception will be held from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. Friday, July 27, and a portion of your registration fee will go to scholarship aid in your area of study. Please register online.

Biomedical sciences professors awarded research grants to study novel treatments

Dr. Murray Blackmore, assistant professor of biomedical sciences, received a two-year, $300,000 grant from the Craig H. Neilsen Foundation to explore a novel approach to treat spinal cord injury. Dr. Behnam Ghasemzadeh, associate professor of biomedical sciences, received a $50,000 grant from the Clinical and Translational Science Institute to study the role of a new brain signaling mechanism involved in the pathophysiology of schizophrenia. PT professors receive national recognition

Professor Luther Kloth recently received the Evonne Fowler Founder’s Award at the 25th anniversary celebration of the Symposium of Advanced Wound Care and Wound Healing Society Meeting in Atlanta in honor of his tireless service and significant contributions to SAWC/WHS. Dr. Allison Hyngstrom received the 2012 Eugene Michels New Investigator Award from the American Physical Therapy Association. In only three years as a Marquette faculty member, Hyngstrom has garnered nearly $600,000 in funding and has already had an impact on the profession with her extensive research on mechanisms of motor impairment, specifically muscle fatigue in chronic stroke populations. Health Sciences students receive top state honors

Clinical laboratory science students recently earned seven of the 10 student poster awards at the American Society for Clinical Laboratory Science – Wisconsin State Convention, while Marquette’s PA students took first through seventh place at the Wisconsin Academy of Physician Assistants State Medical Challenge Bowl, beating teams from University of Wisconsin-Madison, University of Wisconsin-La Crosse and Carroll University. College faculty promoted

Drs. David Baker, John Mantsch and Robert Peoples were all recently promoted from associate professor to full professor of biomedical sciences. Dr. Maura Moyle was promoted from assistant professor to associate professor of speech pathology and audiology; Dr. Marie Hoeger Bement was promoted from assistant professor to associate professor of physical therapy; and Dr. SuJean Choi was promoted from assistant professor to associate professor in the department of biomedical sciences. Congratulations to all!

Bill Cullinan It was another busy semester in Marquette’s College of Health Sciences. Our biomedical sciences students gave tours of the gross anatomy laboratory to a record number of visitors — more than 4,200 high school and college students from around Wisconsin and Illinois. Dr. Donald Neumann, professor of physical therapy, organized and hosted the second annual national educational workshop for kinesiology instructors in May. Dr. David Baker, professor and associate chair of biomedical sciences and co-founder of Promentis Pharmaceuticals, delivered keynote addresses at the annual meetings for NAMI (National Alliance on Mental Illness) in Wisconsin, Montana and Pennsylvania. These and other achievements highlighted in this issue give us many reasons to be proud of our nationally ranked and recognized programs.
