Physical Rehabilitation of the Knee and Ankle: Integrating Structure, Function with Treatment

Dec. 8-9, 2017
Marquette University, Milwaukee, WI

Course Description

This two-day course is designed for physical therapists, their assistants, and athletic trainers who desire a comprehensive yet practical review of the anatomy, kinesiology and treatment principles associated with the knee and ankle.

On the first day, Dr. Don Neumann (author of Kinesiology of the Musculoskeletal System: Foundations for Rehabilitation (Elsevier 2017) will present an overview of the anatomy and kinesiology of the knee and ankle. The presentation will be lecture format, enhanced by video fluoroscopy of joint function and over 100 original kinesiologic illustrations. Each illustration clearly describes the anatomic and mechanical basis for movement, providing the basis for understanding the foundations for many evaluation and treatments experienced in physical therapy clinics.

On the second day, Dr. Andy Starsky will utilize these kinesiological concepts to guide the evaluation and treatment of the knee and ankle. Participants will work in a lab environment examining muscle activation of various therapeutic exercises. Evidence based outcomes measures, treatment, and evaluation tools will be examined. Current trends in knee and ankle surgery and rehabilitation will be examined and reinforced by case studies.

Course Objectives

After the course, participants shall be able to:

  • Describe the structural and functional relationships within and between the knee, talocrual, subtalar and transverse tarsal joints.
  • Cite the major muscles and kinematics at all joints described above.
  • Describe the kinesiologic synergies that exist between the muscle and joints of the distal lower quarter of the body.
  • Describe the pathokinesiologic mechanics behind several orthopedic problems of the region.
  • Understand how the distal lower quarter functions during walking.
  • Utilize kinesiological principles to guide evaluation and treatment choices for musculoskeletal conditions of the knee and ankle joints.
  • Discuss the pathology of knee and ankle conditions.
  • Discuss surgical interventions for selected knee and ankle pathologies.
  • Design rehabilitation programs for selected knee and ankle pathologies.
  • Describe evidence based evaluation tools and outcomes measures used.
