MU CLS Shines at National Meeting
There was a strong MU CLS presence at the 2012 Annual Meeting of the American Society for Clinical Laboratory Science (ASCLS), July 17-21, in Los Angeles, California.
Awards
Dr. April Harkins, Assistant Professor in CLS, won the Scientific Poster Award Professional Category with her presentation of Analysis of Adhesive and Biofilm Abilities of non-albicans Candida. This is the 3rd time in 5 years that Dr. Harkins has taken home this national award.
Dr. Harkins also was awarded an ASCLS Education & Research Fund Grant for her biofilm research along with co-investigators E. Hill, K. Landis-Piwowar, and P. Tille of South Dakota.
Cuifen Li, a 2012 graduate in Clinical Laboratory Science, won the Undergraduate Student Category Scientific Poster Award for presentation of her research, VerifyNow® P2Y12 Test in Clopidogrel and Aspirin Combination Therapy. MU CLS students have presented scientific research posters at each of the last 4 national meetings and have won the Undergraduate Poster Award 3 times in those 4 years.

In addition to the presentations mentioned above, MU CLS faculty made these presentations at the ASCLS meeting:
- Dr. April Harkins gave an invited scientific session: Yeast on the Rise.
- Dr. Stephen Hou, Assistant Professor in CLS, presented a poster titled, Cellular Elements in Preserved Saliva Samples.
State Delegates
Dr. April Harkins and Dr. Linda Laatsch, CLS Department Chair and Associate Professor, served as elected Wisconsin Delegates to the ASCLS Annual Meeting.
National Committee Leadership:
the following appointments were made by Dr. Linda Smith, ASCLS President:
- Dr. April Harkins was appointed co-director of the ASCLS Scientific Assemblies (SA).
- Dr. Linda Laatsch was appointed co-chair of the ASCLS Promotion of the Profession Committee (PPC).
