This year the College is having an historic first—a chaplain to call our own. Father John Schlegel, S.J. recently joined the pastoral team at the Gesu Parish and was asked to serve as chaplain for Health Sciences.

Rev. Schlegel is a member of the Wisconsin Province of the Society of Jesus and has spent the last forty years in higher education as a teacher and administrator. He holds a PhD in International Politics from Oxford University and has taught political science off/on for much of the last decades. As an administrator, he served as Dean at Rockhurst College in Kansas City, Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences here at Marquette [1984-89], Executive and Academic Vice President at John Carroll University, President of the University of San Francisco [1990-2000] and most recently as President of Creighton University ]2000-2011]. His last assignment was as the President and Publisher of America Magazine out of New York City.

His primary role as Chaplain is to be of service to all students—graduate and undergraduate, faculty and staff. "Consider me a resource person for all of you." Rev. Schlegel is happy to meet with you individually or groups for conversation about personal, spiritual or professional issues/topics. His presence/service complements that offered by the Office of Campus Ministry and Gesu parish. Rev. Schlegel encourage you to avail yourself of the services and programs [retreats, service opportunities and spiritual direction] offered by both.

From Rev. Schlegel's perspective, a chaplain can serve the college in these four ways:

[1] Chaplains can offer formal/informal pastoral support, provide referrals and advocacy for students, faculty and staff.

[2] the chaplain can be a key person in crisis and grief management.

[3] the chaplain can specifically support the faith life of the college—from an inclusive and inter-denominational perspective.

[4] the chaplain can be a resource person at faculty meetings or student government meetings on the Jesuit and Catholic identity of Marquette and can interface with other colleges/schools if needed.
