New Colleagues

Sarah Bond, a 2011 Ph.D. recipient from the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill, is our newest faculty member. She takes the place of Fr. John Patrick Donnelly, who retired last year. Sarah is a historian of late antique and early medieval history; her dissertation was on “Criers, Impresarios, and Sextons: Disreputable Occupations in the Roman World.” She has worked on several archeological digs and in 2011-2012 was the Mellon Junior Faculty Fellow in History and Classics at Washington and Lee University in Lexington, Va.

The department will also host a Mitchem Fellow during the 2012-2013 academic year. D’Weston Haywood, a Ph.D. candidate at Northwestern University, will finish his dissertation— “Let Us Make Men: Black Newspapers and a Gendered Vision of Racial Advancement, 1915-1960”—and teach an undergraduate colloquium in the spring. The Mitchem Fellowship program is designed to provide time for writing and access to mentorship opportunities for young scholars of color.
