Chair of the History Dept. DR. Jim Marten

Welcome to the sixth edition of Timeline, the history department's annual newsletter!

The department enjoyed a very good year this year. Although the difficult economic climate that has affected colleges and universities throughout the country and the recent turmoil surrounding the unsuccessful search for the dean of the Way Klingler College of Arts and Sciences have certainly affected us, we still have good news to report:

Information about these and the many other activities of MU faculty, graduate and undergraduate students, and alumni can be found by following the links to the right.

I do have several important personnel announcements.

Irene Guenther, who in this, her fourth year in the department, earned tenure and promotion to associate professor, is leaving Marquette to join her husband Matt in Houston. Irene has been a wonderful colleague and we wish her well; we hope she remembers us when the Texas bluebonnets bloom next spring while we’re shivering through a Wisconsin April. We plan to conduct a national search for Irene’s successor in 2010-2011.

We also bid goodbye to long-time administrative assistant Joyce Hunkel (Joyce started work in the history office on September 11, 2001), who retired last fall to South Carolina, where her husband Dick had taken a job. Her successor is Jolene Kreisler, who previously worked for Ernst and Young. Since starting work in September, she has quickly learned the necessary ins and outs of academic schedules, procedures, and software and become a valued member of the department.

Phil Naylor received a much-deserved promotion to full professor.

Dan Meissner will succeed Carla Hay as Director of Undergraduate Studies this summer.

We continue to add information and visuals to our website, so please get caught up with even more of the department’s activities and programs at Last fall entered the 21st century by creating a Facebook page (click here to become a Fan).

Finally, I’d like to thank Jolene for arranging and posting the newsletter and to our colleagues and students for submitting reports of their activities. As always, I encourage you to let us know how and what you’re doing and to pass this along to other alums who may not be on our email list.
