Greetings From the Chair

It's my pleasure to welcome you to the third edition of Timeline, the history department's annual newsletter!  As always, I'd like to thank the editor, Dan Meissner for his perseverance and creativity, and to our colleagues and students for submitting reports of their activities. 

Among the year's highlights are:

[The annual Klement and Casper Lectures;
[The department’s hosting of the American Catholic Historical Association conference, led by Steve Avella;
[Our successful hiring of a Japanese historian, Michael Wert, and a sub-Saharan African historian, Chima Korieh;
[John Krugler’s promotion to full professor and Dan Meissner’s promotion to associate professor with tenure; and
[The formal approval of our new MA in global studies.

But there are many other activities and publications and events that reveal much about this dynamic and busy department. I would like to mention a couple of features on the department website (at http://www.marquette.edu/history/) that may interest you. These include links to a compilation of our faculty’s publications and to a list of former PhD students, along with their current employment at colleges, universities, and other institutions. You can also listen to a cut from Phil Naylor’s Western Civilization Blues Band (that’s him in the shades and beret in the bottom left-hand corner). And I invite you to browse through the entries in “This Week in Marquette History,” which several research assistants have compiled to help celebrate the university’s 125th anniversary.
Please feel free to pass the website address along to friends and classmates; we obtained email addresses from the Alumni Relations office, so only history grads with up-to-date files received the email linking alumni to this newsletter. With your help, we can reach even more former students.
