Letter from the Chair:

Greetings from Coughlin Hall! Since last year’s edition of Timeline, members of our community have, of course, taught and written about history, but at least one of us actually witnessed history in the making. We’ve celebrated the retirement of one colleague, the promotion of two others, and the hiring of yet another.

We’ve also graduated forty-eight undergraduates, seven MA students, and two Ph.D. students and held our annual Klement and Casper Lectures (and several other public events).

And, in May, we helped long-time colleague and friend Fr. Francis Paul Prucha, SJ, celebrate his 90th birthday, the 70th anniversary of his graduation from River Falls State Teachers College, the 60th anniversary of his entering the Society of Jesus, and his 50th anniversary as a member of the history department.

PruchaFr. Prucha is a former president of the Western History Association, a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize, and author of many books on U. S. American Indian policy. His magnum opus was the two-volume The Great Father: The United States Government and the American Indian, published in 1985. The department co-sponsored the celebration with University Archives, which hosted the reception in the Prucha Reading Room of the Raynor Library.

Follow the links to the right to read about these highlights of the academic year and many others. In addition, you can read about or watch members of the department as they discuss their research or world Great Fatherevents by going to the “Historians in the Spotlight” section of our website.

As always, we’d love to hear from you. Send your news and comments to me at And if you can’t wait until next year for the latest news from the department, please check us out on Facebook.

Best wishes, Jim Marten
