The honors program: WHERE ARE THEY NOW?

Natalie Campbell-Owen graduated from the University Honors Program with a B.A. in Secondary Education and Writing-Intensive English.  In summer 2011 Natalie was a recipient of an Honors Program summer research grant and a Women’s and Gender Studies fellowship, which funded her to travel to Uganda to examine prevalent educational theories in the classroom.  Through the Office of Residence Life at Marquette, Natalie served as an RA for Honors students.  Natalie is now working in El Salvador, evaluating study-abroad programs in universities and language schools and hosting international travel groups for the National Registration Center for Study Abroad.

Louise Gebel graduated from the University Honors Program in May 2009 with a B.A. in Journalism and Spanish. She now lives in Washington, DC and works at the Associated Press as an ENPS News Production Specialist. With a mix of technical know-how and a cool head under pressure, Louise helps journalists throughout the Americas put on television news in English, Spanish and Portuguese. All the travel affords her opportunities to experience the culture - and culinary highlights - of great destinations from California to North Carolina and Mexico to Chile.

Hilary Braseth graduated from Marquette University in May 2011 with an Honors Bachelor’s Degree in Political Science and Economics. While at Marquette, she co-founded the University’s first co-ed a cappella group the Gold ‘N Blues and also traveled extensively to the Lower 9th Ward of New Orleans, rebuilding homes and conducting research in the post-Katrina climate. During her studies Hilary was also the initiator of Revitalizing Marquette, a series of events that involved faculty, administrators and students to dialogue across divisions, address controversial issues and develop strategies of how best to move forward as a community in the face of those issues. Hilary spent her Spring 2009 semester in Washington D.C. with Marquette’s Les Aspin Program, interning for a Congresswoman and studying on Capitol Hill. Throughout her four years, she worked as a Marquette tour guide in the admissions office and also as an intern for several Aldermen with the Milwaukee City Council.

After graduating, Hilary now finds herself living a starkly different lifestyle on the other side of the world in Guinea, West Africa, working as a Community Economic Development Volunteer with the Peace Corps. Her work involves building sustainable ecotourism and also a waste management and recycling system for her city, Dalaba.
