Human Rights Initiative

As a Jesuit, Catholic university, a commitment to human rights is central to Marquette’s mission. The Human Rights Initiative was created to develop the next generation of leaders committed to promoting and protecting human rights. With a generous seed grant from the Argosy Foundation, the Human Rights Initiative is the start of a major human rights campaign at Marquette.

Mission

The Marquette Human Rights Initiative has three core missions:

  • To educate the next generation of human rights leaders;
  • To promote 'first generation'political and civil rights and 'second generation' economic and social rights; and
  • To be resolutely interdisciplinary in structure and approach

Activities

The Human Rights Initiative is developing the following components to achieve its mission:

  • Graduate and undergraduate degrees in human rights leadership;
  • Human rights internships at the local, national and international levels to connect students with careers and promote Marquette's tradition of community service;
  • Interdisciplinary research opportunities for Marquette faculty; and
