Call to service

In a March 2010 speech, Rev. Adolfo Nicolas, S.J., superior general of the Society of Jesus, said, “Depth of thought and imagination in the Ignatian tradition involves a profound engagement with the real.”

What I Have Learned So Far — a poem by Mary Oliver

As we at Marquette consider our engagement with ‘the real,’ how might we make a difference in our community in a new or heightened way? How might we further engage with ‘the real’?” To build upon our Jesuit legacy of being men and women for and with others and to mark Father Pilarz’s arrival, the Call to Service asks each member of the Marquette community to commit this year to a service experience.

It’s the dawn of a new era for Marquette. What better time to rededicate ourselves to the goal of transforming the world through service to and collaboration with the community? We ask that you use your talents and gifts to address the gritty realities and inequities that plague our community and world and to find meaningful ways to work in solidarity with our neighbors. This may involve moving outside your comfort zone or finding ways to deepen the service you already perform.

Whatever service you participate in — whether it’s with your peers, your family, your office or even alone — remember that St Ignatius asked us to “go forth and set the world on fire.” Let’s bring together our passion and our Marquette spirit to ignite renewed hope and peace in our world.
