In addition to its functional areas that support research and innovation activities, the Office of Research and Innovation is charged with leading university-wide initiatives that promote scholarship and entrepreneurship.

Global Water Center

Marquette in late 2015 expanded its role in the growing water sector through a significant presence in the Global Water Center in Milwaukee’s Walker’s Point neighborhood. The 100,000-square-foot, seven-story building houses water-related research facilities for universities, existing water-related companies and accelerator space for emerging companies.

The Grocery Challenge

At his annual address to the campus community, President Lovell announced a Grocery Challenge that is open to the campus community. He hopes that student-generated proposals will be part of the solution. Throughout the semester, participants will form teams, explore potential options, meet with residents, “speed network” with local experts, and pitch their solutions. Some of the ideas will be piloted in the fall of 2017.

Innovation Campus

In his inaugural address, President Lovell revealed that the university is exploring options for a presence at Innovation Campus, a 71-acre public-private research park in Wauwatosa owned and controlled by the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee Real Estate Foundation. With research expertise in biomedical engineering and devices, and advanced materials and manufacturing, Innovation Campus aims to bring industry, academic and medical practice together near Wisconsin’s largest academic health cluster to drive research, development and entrepreneurship in Milwaukee.

Social innovation

The Social Innovation Initiative explores, develops and implements a variety of social innovation programs at Marquette, including bundled offerings of speakers, residencies, learning activities, coursework, celebrations and community engagements. All campus members are welcome to opt in at any time, and resources are available for those seeking to embrace social innovation through the university experience. Goals for the initiative include equipping champions on- and off-campus, building curricular and co-curricular practices, and serving as a regional convener of like-minded agents of positive social change.

Strategic innovation fund

Similar to a venture capital fund, the strategic innovation fund provides seed money to students, faculty and staff to explore entrepreneurial ventures.
