Charles “Chuck” Swoboda
Chair, Marquette University Board of Trustees

Dr. Lovell brings the experience and vision to effectively lead Marquette amid the challenging dynamics of higher education today. He clearly values the transformative experience of a Marquette education and, as our president, he will have the ability to lead and live out his Catholic faith as a servant leader."

Statement of Most Reverend Jerome E. Listecki,
Archbishop of Milwaukee

It was the dream of Milwaukee’s first Archbishop, John Martin Henni, to establish a Catholic, Jesuit College in Milwaukee. Now, as the first lay leader of Marquette University since its founding in 1881, Dr. Michael Lovell will lead Marquette University into a new era of Catholic higher education in the Archdiocese of Milwaukee. I look forward to working with Dr. Lovell to ensure the Catholic values and identity of Marquette University remain strong under his leadership, as Marquette continues to invite students to grow in mind, heart and spirit and to be men and women for others. Through the intercession of St. Ignatius of Loyola, founder of the Jesuits, I ask God’s blessing upon Dr. Lovell and the entire Marquette community during this exciting time of transition. Ad majorem Dei gloriam!

Chris Abele
Executive, Milwaukee County

I am so happy and excited for Mike, the Lovell family and Marquette University. As Mike’s friend, I know he will excel at Marquette, and lead that great university to even greater heights. As County Executive, I’m happy Mike is staying in Milwaukee to continue to improve our community. Milwaukee County is proud to work closely with both Marquette and UWM and this will strengthen those partnerships.

Tom Barrett
Mayor, City of Milwaukee

Chancellor Lovell’s move to Marquette University is a win for Milwaukee. During his time at UWM, Chancellor Lovell and I had a close working relationship as we partnered on numerous efforts to advance both UWM and the City of Milwaukee. Our strong partnership certainly will continue as he takes on the challenges at Marquette. Marquette is an extremely important part of Milwaukee and I look forward to working with Mike in his new role. I’m also confident UWM will find a leader that will continue to move that academic institution forward.
