
Thomas J. "Toby" Peters, Ph.D., Grad '97, is a senior associate vice president at Marquette University, assuming that role in July 2008. In this position, Dr. Peters assists the executive vice president by overseeing projects and offering counsel and support on university matters within the Office of Administration, Department of Human Resources, Division of Student Affairs, and Office of University Planning/University Architect. He currently serves as the co-chair for the university's reaffirmation for accreditation initiative and co-coordinates the University’s Event and Emergency Management Plan.
Prior to his duties as senior associate vice president, Dr. Peters served as the associate vice president for administration where he assisted the vice president with the oversight responsibilities of the Alumni Memorial Union, Book Marq (Follett College Stores), Campus Auxiliaries, Facilities, Information Technology Services, Public Safety, University Dining Services and the Marquette Interchange Project.
Dr. Peters has also served as the director of Marquette’s Alumni Memorial Union and auxiliary services. In this role, Dr. Peters provided direct supervision of the Alumni Memorial Union program, which involves managing Marquette University's student union, and the satellite operation, the Union Sports Annex.
Before joining Marquette, Dr. Peters served as the director for the Office of Student Centers and Activities at Syracuse University. In this role, Dr. Peters was responsible for the student centers and activities program, which involves managing Syracuse University's two student unions, the Schine and Goldstein Student Centers, and advising student groups regarding campus student activity programming.
Dr. Peters has consulted on a variety of topics including: assessment, construction, organization structure and review, and food services at the following higher education institutions: Arizona State University, Boston College, College of Holy Cross, Loyola University New Orleans, Springfield College, SUNY Geneseo, Temple University, University of Notre Dame, and Virginia Tech University.
In addition, he has presented and published on topics including transformational leadership, student retention, student employment, student development, assessment, volunteerism, diversity training, construction and renovation, unrelated business income taxes (UBIT), and unfair competition.
Dr. Peters received a doctorate in educational policy and leadership from Marquette University and a master of business administration and bachelor of science degrees from Southern Illinois University-Carbondale.
