History:

4th Century The Vatican library and archives originated in the Fourth Century with the Scrinium
1610 Pope Paul V established the Archivum Secretum Vaticanum or Vatican Secret Archives as the repository of the Roman pontiffs
1810 Napoleon moved the Vatican Archives to Paris
1817 The Vatican Archives was restored at the Vatican
1870 Italy confiscated those holdings kept outside of the Vatican, which are held today by the Roman State Archives
