History: St. Mother Theodore Guerin founded the Sisters of Providence at Saint Mary-of-the-Woods, Indiana, 1840, who self-identify with the post-nominal initials, S.P.” The sisters served the Hunkpapa Lakota Indians at St. Peter Mission, Fort Yates, Standing Rock Reservation, North Dakota, with pastoral ministry and summertime religious education, 1960s-1980s.
