History: The Vicariate Apostolate of New Mexico was erected in 1850 for the territory in the Diocese of Durango, Mexico, that had been annexed by the United States. The Diocese of Santa Fe succeeded the vicariate, 1853. It was expanded to include the Gadsden Purchase, 1859, and it was elevated to an archdiocese, 1875. Santa Fe and its predecessors have administered the following Native American missions, parishes, and schools in Arizona and New Mexico:

The Archdiocesan Archives began formally, 1933, by building on the holdings of the former Franciscan Archives of the Custody of the Conversion of St. Paul (Santo Domingo de Guzmán Mission, Santo Domingo Pueblo), 1616-1933.

1680	During the Pueblo Revolt, most records archived at Santo Domingo were destroyed
1694-1933	Occasional fires at various missions and parishes destroyed some archival records before they could be transferred to Santo Domingo
1886	Flooding of the Rio Grande destroyed some records at Santo Domingo
1933	Parishes transferred to the Archdiocesan Archives all loose and bound volumes of records began prior to 1850, which then were microfilmed by the Genealogical Society of Utah (Salt Lake City, Utah) and the Huntington Library (San Marino, California)
