Biographical Note:  William P. McCahill was born June 29, 1916, in Marshalltown, Iowa. He attended Marquette University and received a bachelors of science and masters degree in Journalism in 1938 and 1940, respectively. He enlisted in the Marine Corps Reserve on February 18, 1941 and was commissioned a second lieutenant on May 29, 1941. A complete summary of McCahill's military service is given in the preliminary pages of the transcript. n 1946, the McCahill family established the Robert L. McCahill Memorial at Marquette University. The annual award honored the memory of McCahill's brother, who was killed in World War II, and recognizes an outstanding senior athlete. William P. McCahill died October 2, 1999. Since his death Marquette has made the award in memory of both Robert L. and William P. McCahill.

Scope and Content:  This is the typed transcript of a series of recorded interviews conducted with Colonel William P. McCahill, USMCR (Ret.), at the Marine Corps Historical Center on 27 July 1982, 31 August 1982, and 9 December 1982, for the Marine Corps Oral History Program. The transcript was published in 1989. A description of the oral history program and the interviews is given in the foreword of the transcript. The interview focuses on McCahill's service with the United States Marine Corps.
