B-5.4 Series 2-FV Alumni Papers. Vater, Fred, 1886-1971.Scrapbook, [ca. 1907-ca. 1914].

Biographical Note:  Fred Vater was born on May 30, 1886. While attending Marquette University, Vater played football, likely from 1911 to 1914. In 1912, in the aftermath of a poor season, an $18,000 deficit, and in the face of apparent student apathy, the university decided to discontinue the football program. Almost immediately, students held a mass meeting and voted to impose a $5 athletic fee on themselves in order to cover the cost of the floundering program. Thus, football was not discontinued, and Vater was voted team captain in 1913. He graduated from Marquette's School of Dentistry in 1914. Vater died December 15, 1971.
