 DON DOLL, S.J., COLLECTION

Photographs, interviews, and background documentation on notable individual Brulé, Dakota, Hunkpapa, Oglala, Sans Arc, and Yankton Indians, mostly in South Dakota, which were compiled for the book, Vision Quest: Men, Women, and Sacred Sites of the Sioux Nation.

Gift from Donald A. Doll, S.J., 2004. Processed by Mark G. Thiel, CA (Certified Archivist), Tamara Lange, and student assistants, 2004-2005.

Biographical Note

Donald A. Doll (1937-), S.J. is a Jesuit priest and photographer whose works have been featured in National Geographic (“Hunters of the Being Sea,” June 1984, and “The Athabascans along the Yukon,” February 1990) and a number of the Day in the Life of… books, including America, California, Italy, Ireland, Passage to Vietnam, and Christmas in America. He was introduced to photography and the Brulé Indians while serving at St. Francis Mission on the Rosebud Reservation, South Dakota in 1975. Two of his books are Crying for a Vision, 1976 and Vision Quest: Men, Women and Sacred Sites of the Sioux Nation, 1994.

"Father Don" has been active in the National Press Photographers Association and has received numerous awards, including the 1997 Kodak Crystal Eagle Award for Impact in Photojournalism for his many years of work with Native Americans. Since 1969 he has served as a professor of journalism and holds the Heider Endowed Jesuit Chair at Creighton University, Omaha, Nebraska.

In spring, 2008, he served as the Marquette University Wade Scholar Lecturer. In conjunction, the Marquette Haggerty Museum presented “The Grandeur of God”: Photographs by Don Doll, S.J.  The exhibition’s title was inspired by the poem, “God’s Grandeur,” by Gerard Manley Hopkins, 1877. The exhibition included a selection of Doll’s Native American images, panoramas along the Lewis and Clark Trail, Jesuits assisting refugees in Uganda, Sudan, and Eastern Europe, landmine victims in Angola, and Tsunami survivors in India and Sri Lanka.

Scope and Content

The Don Doll, S.J., Collection includes several publications by Doll plus the documentation compiled by him for the book, Vision Quest: Men, Women and Sacred Sites of the Sioux Nation.

The Vision Quest documentation pertains to 82 prominent American Indians from South Dakota, Minnesota, and North Dakota, all of who were active in their cultural reawakening of the 1970s and 1980s. The documentation is divided by format into four sub-series pertaining to color photographic prints, color transparencies, interview recordings, and transcripts with related news clippings. There under the sub-series are arranged alphabetically by surname. Other Marquette collections include more documentation on Father Doll and several of the following persons.
