PRELIMINARY INVENTORY

The Richard E. Blackwelder Collection has not been fully processed. The objective of this preliminary inventory is to provide interested patrons with a basic understanding of the collection, considered the largest collection of secondary resources on the life and work of J.R.R. Tolkien ever assembled. Diligently collected during his retirement, the well-defined scheme is a reflection of the collector's scientific training. An author- and subject-index to the collection is available within the the archives. Richard Blackwelder also contributed numerous editions and printings of Tolkien's work to the Department of Special Collections, including nearly all printings of the Ballantine paperbacks. These volumes, including Blackwelder's own writing, Tolkien Phraseology (1990), A Tolkien Thesaurus (1990), and Tolkien Portraiture (1993) have been cataloged in MARQCAT, Marquette Libraries' electronic catalog.
