New E-Resources

August 2007—The Libraries have added the following new online subscriptions and digital texts since January 2007.  Most are new acquisitions, while several represent a change of format or significant enhancement to ongoing subscriptions. All are available to Marquette users from any campus network location, as well as from off-campus.  If you have questions, please drop by the Information Desk or use other AskUs! services.

New Databases

Abbreviationes Online is a dictionary of medieval Latin abbreviations, useful in both learning and teaching medieval Latin paleography and as a reference and research tool.  Its Main Dictionary, comprising over 70,000 entries covering the 8th through 15th centuries, will continue to grow with annual upgrades.

ABZU is a guide to information related to the study of the Ancient Near East and Ancient Mediterranean world.  The database gathers Web sites and citations to networked, open access books, articles, and other reports of research.

ArchiveGrid is an online service that provides nearly a million detailed descriptions of archival collections held by thousands of libraries, museums, historical societies, and archives worldwide.  The database also assists researchers locate unpublished papers of individuals and organizations.  Contact information is available to assist arranging a visit or ordering copies.

Brill's New Pauly: Encyclopaedia of the Ancient World (format change) is the online version of the Brill encyclopedias covering antiquity (10 volumes, A-Phe, to date) and classical tradition, (2 volumes, A-Ius, to date).

Conference Board Research Online Collection includes research from the Conference Board on current issues in business management and on U.S. and global economics, covering topics such as business outlook, leadership decisions, performance excellence, corporate governance, human resource management, productivity, economic indicators, and analysis/forecasts of regional, national, and international economic conditions.

Digital Karl Barth Library features the entire corpus of Barth’s Gesamtausgabe in digital format.  Contains the Theologischer Verlag Zürich's edition of Barth’s works in German, which currently comprises more than 40 volumes of sermons, letters, lectures, conversations, and academic writing.  The collection includes the 14-volume Kirchliche Dogmatik, English translations of selected works, photographs, audio files, and other archival content.  The library is updated quarterly.

Encyclopaedia Judaica (format change, now accessible outside the Libraries) is an electronic version of the second edition of the 22-volume Encyclopaedia Judaica covering Jewish life, history, culture, and religion.  The edition has more than 21,000 signed articles, 600 maps, charts, tables and illustrations, photos, extensive cross-references, bibliographies, place-name lists, chronologies, and a comprehensive, fully-searchable index.

Film & Television Literature Index provides indexing and abstracts for over 300 publications, covering the literature of film and television theory, preservation & restoration, writing, production, cinematography, and technical aspects of the industry.

Times Literary Supplement Archive contains the complete text (in image format) of this primary source of twentieth-century British cultural and literary history.  The archive includes 5,000+ issues, more than 250,000 reviews, letters, poems, and articles; search features include author, book title, reviewer, subject, and date.

Enhancements to Databases

Lexis/Nexis Academic Universe launched a new interface that with "Easy Search" and "Power Search" forms; the ability to add and combine terms on the fly; support for article-level linking; and the ability to export citations to RefWorks.  New online helps and tutorials are linked from the main screen.  New tabs for Legal, Business, and People allow searchers to start with a narrower database when the focus is in one of these areas.

PsycArticles the American Psychological Association's database covering its 60 journals, moved to a new PsycNet platform as of Sept. 1, offering more powerful search features.

Web of Science enhancements include a new search area for authors, allowing the user to search by author with an immediate tabular view; EndNote upgrades that give the user the ability to immediately cite references; and a Firefox plug-in that provides the user the capability to capture web pages.

Enhanced Digital Journal Collections

Eighteenth Century Journals: A Portal to Newspapers and Periodicals added the first part of the collection, formerly held only in microfilm format, to the digital collection, now bringing together 165 rare journals printed between c.1685-1815 (see list of titles).  The collection provides a wide variety of periodicals ranging from political debate to London society gossip, the writings of Sir Isaac Newton, the French Revolution, and reviews of literature and fashion throughout Europe.  The periodicals draw on the Hope Collection at the Bodleian Library, Oxford, and the Harry Ransom Humanities Research Center, University of Texas.

Sage Journal Collections added 175 journal titles to the 300 existing titles, particularly enhancing the health sciences, history, business, and communication.
