Stir the Pot: Cookbook of the Libraries' Secret Chefs |
![]() June 2008--Raynor Memorial Libraries' Secret Chef Society has released a long-requested collection of favorite recipes. Since the fundraising activity's inception in 2001, volunteer library staff members (secret chefs) have prepared all-staff soup luncheons to benefit designated local charities. In honor of the 75th anniversary of the Catholic Worker Movement, 100% of the proceeds of Stir the Pot will benefit Casa Maria, Milwaukee's Catholic Worker House. As suggested by its title, Stir the Pot contains recipes for over one hundred soup, stew, and other main dish favorites. While the identities of the original chefs were secret, in keeping with their goal of doing good work anonymously, all the recipes are attributed and many contain tips, vegetarian suggestions, substitutions, and information on specialized ingredients. A final section contains favorite appetizers and desserts. The 126-page, spiral-bound book sells for $15 per copy, or discounts of 2 for $25 and 3 or more @ 12.50 each. Purchasers who choose not to take advantage of the discounts will be recognized as Platinum Donors in the Secret Chef Blog. The Secret Chef lunch du jour, which runs primarily during the post-Thanksgiving pre-holiday weeks, has raised more than $8,000 in its seven seasons. In addition to Casa Maria, beneficiaries of donated funds have included the Milwaukee Rescue Mission, Repairers of the Breach, Companion Animal Rescue and Adoption Center, Books for Africa (St. Roberts Parish), MU Habitat for Humanity International, and recently, Save the Children Burma Cyclone Relief and Mercy Corps China Earthquake Relief. Stir the Pot's editorial staff is named on the title page: Molly Larkin, editor-in-chief, Phaedra Zeider Toral, Yolanda Toral, Susan Stawicki-Vrobel, Joan Sommer, Leslie Quade, Amy Petraglia, Vicki Meinecke, Tamara Lange, and Pat Berge. Stop the Presses--News Flash: Thanks to enthusiastic community support, the first edition sold out within days of its arrival. The second printing of Stir the Pot will be available by August 4th. People who already placed an order should contact Molly Larkin (288-7599 or e-mail) about pickup. New purchase inquiries will be accepted as long as stock lasts. Following is an acknowledgement for the donation of the 1st printing proceeds: |
