All students, faculty, and staff are invited to join the library-sponsored fall colloquium, presented by Dr. James South, associate professor and chair of the Philosophy Department.

Philosophy helps us to think about our experiences, question our relation to society's "common sense," and assists us in coming to certain forms of self-knowledge.  Some elements of popular culture, including James Bond and Buffy the Vampire Slayer, provoke a similar response.  Learn just how this works in Dr. South's informative colloquium.

Dr. South earned his doctorate from Duke University and joined Marquette's faculty in 1995.  His areas of research are Late Medieval and Renaissance philosophy and the philosophical interpretation and understanding of popular culture.  In the latter area, Dr. South has edited Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Philosophy (Open Court, 2003) and co-edited (with Jacob Held), James Bond and Philosophy (Open Court, 2006).  He has also published essays on comic books, the films of Woody Allen, and the Beatles.  He is currently co-editing (with Lynne Edwards and Elizabeth Rambo) a book of essays on seasons six and seven of "Buffy the Vampire Slayer."

The colloquium series is jointly sponsored by the Marquette University Librarians' Assembly and the Library Support Staff Association.  The event is free, open to all, and light refreshments will be available.  Questions concerning the event may be addressed to Rose Trupiano at 288-5998 or E-mail.
