October 2010—Raynor Memorial Libraries are pleased to announce completion of the digital collection, Postcards from Manhattan: The Portrait Photography of Carl Van Vechten. With a final installment of portraits, representing a wide variety of dancers, the collection now boasts over 2,400 postcards depicting 362 notable individuals in the twentieth century arts.

From 1946-1956 the celebrated photographer Carl Van Vechten (1880-1964) mailed his famous portraits on postcards to his friend, Karl Priebe (1914-1976), a Wisconsin artist whose papers reside in the Department of Special Collections and University Archives.

The Libraries' initial digitization of Van Vechten's collection, posted online in February 2009, focused on images of famous African Americans, to coincide with the centennial celebration of the founding of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP). Since then the completed project now encompasses the full range of Van Vechten's vast circle of friends and acquaintances. His body of portraiture constitutes a veritable "who's who" of prominent persons in the twentieth century arts and humanities.

An exhibit of original Van Vechten postcards from the Priebe Papers is on display during the month of October on the first floor of Raynor Library. Completion of the digital collection coincides with Wisconsin Archives Month 2010, a statewide event highlighting and celebrating archival postcard collections.
