January 2011—Libraries Go Mobile
Anywhere, on-the-go library access is here! Two related new developments now allow library users to connect to the library website and to the campus catalog, MARQCAT, using mobile devices.
The mobile website may be accessed directly at www.marquette.edu/library/mobile/ or smartphone users connecting to the standard site will automatically be redirected. The new library website has been configured to connect easily to the most-used services, including MARQCAT, Ask a Librarian (IM), research guides, databases, services, class reserves, hours, and more. The site is compatible with Android, iPhone, Blackberry, and Windows Mobile.
The campus catalog, optimized for mobile devices, is named MARQmobile. The software optimizes large, bright screens and updated browser support. Features such as links to online resources, requesting books, and renewing loans are now available on mobile devices. MARQmobile supports the iPhone, Blackberry, Palm, and Google’s Android. Connect to the mobile catalog at catalog.marquette.edu or connect from any other site and MARQmobile will detect your operating systems and format the screen for mobile device use.
Raynor Memorial Libraries studies conducted in 2010 revealed that hundreds of hits on library Web pages each month originated from mobile devices. Optimizing the user-friendliness for smart phones has been a priority for library administration. A special research guide was designed to point users to electronic resources and databases that are mobile-friendly.
