2010 Foundation Directory Released

Raynor Memorial Libraries has released its 2010 Foundations in Wisconsin directory. The 29th edition documents 1,314 foundations responsible for more than $473 million in grants. The unique tool, available in both print and online formats, is designed to help grantseekers as part of the outreach efforts of the Libraries' Funding Information Center. The online database, updated monthly, is available free of charge to members of the Marquette community. INSTITUTIONAL REPOSITORY UPDATE

e-Publications@Marquette, an online digital repository for faculty and student scholarship, has seen significant growth in the past year. This year, the library added more than 350 articles authored by Marquette faculty, 101 electronic theses and dissertations from the summer and fall of 2009 and spring 2010, and eleven Professional Projects from the College of Professional Studies. In addition, the Graduate Journal of Counseling Psychology is now hosted in e-Publications@Marquette. Usage of the repository has increased 163% since January 2010, with an average of 5,200 downloads a month. Collection News

Mango, a self-paced audio-visual set of language courses heads the list of new electronic resources. The courses currently cover 22 foreign languages and 15 languages for foreign speakers (ESL). More...

Noteworthy Acquisitions: A list of new subscriptions since January includes an electronic handbook and eight new databases in areas as diverse as world news, theology, curriculum materials, linguistics, and more. In response to faculty requests for primary materials, several large collections of microfilm, totaling over 3,000 reels, have been purchased and are currently being cataloged. See complete list...

Postcards from Manhattan. On October 1st the Department of Special Collections and Archives will publish the final installment of photographs for its digital collection, Postcards from Manhattan: The Portrait Photography of Carl Van Vechten. Over 800 postcards depicting notable ballet and modern dancers (Alicia Markova, below) will join the nearly 1,600 portraits already online. The completed site will boast images of 359 individuals, embodying a “who’s who” of prominent persons in the mid-twentieth century arts. Celebrated photographer Carl Van Vechten (1880-1964) mailed these portrait postcards to his friend, Karl Priebe (1914-1976), a Wisconsin artist whose papers reside in Raynor Memorial Libraries. An exhibit of the original postcards will be displayed on the first floor of Raynor Library during October to celebrate Wisconsin Archives Month, which focuses on historical postcards. Department SPOTLIGHT: Research and Instructional Services

The Research and Instructional Services Department is actively working to build a more robust instructional program, developing learning resources, and creating new opportunities for Marquette students and researchers to learn effective research skills. In addition to the standard classroom sessions that we have been offering for years, we are now expanding our efforts to include open workshops on the basics of library research and the effective use of Google, developing research guides on a myriad of topics and resources, creating dynamic and interactive online learning objects that can be embedded into online courses and websites, and offering research assistance and promoting our services via Web 2.0 tools and applications. website tweaks

Please reply to a brief survey. Since the re-design and launch of the Libraries' website in December 2009, the site averages more than 10,000 page views daily. Please help us assess site usability by taking a very brief survey (through 9/30/10).

Observers of the libraries' website will notice some changes designed to better serve users. First, the blue "Find Resources" section of the home page was updated to include a tab for Research Guides, one of the most popular starting points for students. Also   new on the home page (near the top) are Facebook and Flickr icons to connect users with the library presence on those sites. Icons have been added in the Library News quadrant for e-mail alerts and for the RSS feed for library   news. Both of these functions will allow users to receive news items upon request as they are posted. Finally, users will spot a new chat tool on most library pages. The "Ask a Librarian" tool allows easy instant messaging with the Information Desk—a quick way to get answers for basic questions.

Attention Faculty

Turnitin recently launched an enhanced 2.0 version of their "Originality Checking" service. Some of the enhancements include a fully-formatted paper view with clearly marked matches; easy access to the source text and expanded source lists. The Libraries coordinate campus-wide access to Turnitin.com. During 2009-10 Turnitin checked 34,234 submissions (including drafts, lab reports, papers, and reports). The Libraries' Citation Help guide has also been updated with examples of all common styles, as well as information for students about the what and why of citing sources. The Chicago Manual of Style 16th edition has just been published, but the online guide is always current; note the edition option in the upper right corner of the CMOS home page. More...

The research guides are continually updated and new guides added to now total just under 100 guides. Some of the newest guides include Accounting, Bioinformatics, Industry Information, and Mobile Devices. Recent statistics show that Evidence Based Practice - Health Care by Martha Jermé is the Libraries' most visited guide with 5,393 views so far this year. See the complete A-Z list.

Group Study Rooms enhanced

Need space for your study group, student-faculty meeting, or preparing a group presentation? Flat screen monitors and laptop connections have been added to three group study rooms and an additional room (144A) has been added to the pool of rooms. Planning is underway to further upgrade 144A to a multi-media production lab later this semester. Cables are available at the Raynor Circulation Desk for users who do not have their own. Ask at the Circulation Desk about procedures and advance reservations. Use and reservation procedures are posted.
