research Competition launched

The 14th Annual Maria Dittman Library Research Competition is now accepting submissions through March 11. All A-grade papers written during 2010 for a Marquette course are eligible for a $200 prize. The competition honors a former long-time Marquette instruction librarian by recognizing effective library research.

Libraries go mobile

Anywhere, on-the-go library access is here! No apps needed. Two related new developments now allow library users to connect to the library website and the the campus catalog, MARQCAT, using mobile devices. The standard website will redirect mobile users or the mobile site may be accessed directly here and features most-used library services including Ask a Librarian (IM), research guides, databases, services, class reserves, and more. The campus catalog, optimized for mobile devices under the name MARQmobile, includes links to online resources, requesting books, and renewing loans. New digital media studio opens

Library staff used the intersession period to set up a new campus resource for students. Located in Raynor's Information Commons, the new Digital Media Studio offers workspace (R144), two workstations (PC and Mac), media equipment, and training and assistance in the production and editing of digital projects and presentations. Audio and video equipment may be borrowed for a 3-day period after a short orientation; iPads may be borrowed for 1 day (24 hours). MARQCATplus: NOW INCLUDES ARTICLES

In addition to the new keyword interface, the catalog has the powerful new ability to search more collections. To distinguish this difference, the enhanced catalog has been dubbed MARQCATplus. Now, articles matching search words are retrieved from two large fulltext article databases. In addition, searches using the MARQCATplus interface retrieve records of photos and other digitized materials from Marquette's Special Collections and Archives. More...

MORE Technology News

Two more group study rooms in Raynor (R060E and R221) have been upgraded by the addition of large LCD flat screen monitors with laptop connectivity. They will be useful for meetings and for preparing group presentations. Use and reservation procedures are posted.

The laptops have moved to the Information Desk, where they may be borrowed for up to four hours. A description of their hardware and software is here; prospective users may check on current availability here.

Collection News

Electronic Enlightenment: This new database provides a gateway to the "long 18th" century via its digital collection of letters between more than 7,000 correspondents from 45 nationalities. Early 17th c. to mid-19th c. writers include famous authors and thinkers (such as Pope, Swift, Voltaire, Adam Smith, Locke, Descartes, and Hobbes) as well as butchers, servants, and shopkeepers. The collection of 58,000+ letters may be browsed by decades and is fulltext searchable. More...

Jay Kirk, long-time head of library collection management, retired at the end of December. Jay joined the libraries in 1976, charged with opening and managing the Science Library until it merged into the new Raynor Library in 2003. A national search is underway for his replacement. congratulations dean welburn

Congratulations to Dean of Libraries Janice Welburn, who was recently named 2011 Academic/Research Librarian of the Year by the Association of College and Research Libraries (ACRL). The prestigious award recognizes an outstanding member of the library profession who has made a significant national or international contribution to academic/research librarianship and library development. Welburn joined the Marquette Libraries in 2006 after serving as associate dean of the University of Arizona Libraries. A prolific contributor to the library and information science literature, she co-edited the 2010 ACRL book Advocacy, Outreach and the Nation’s Academic Libraries: A Call for Action. The Saint John’s Bible

Library staff are proud to present the acquisition of The Saint John’s Bible Heritage Edition in celebration of the university’s annual Mission Week in February. Comprising seven volumes, the Heritage Edition is a full-sized reproduction of the modern-day illuminated manuscript commissioned by Saint John’s Abbey and University in Collegeville, Minnesota. The illuminated manuscript will be the topic of several discussions and week-long display during Mission Week (full schedule here). Special Collections

Catholic Social Action Project Update: Supported by a grant from the Council for Libraries and Information Resources, archivists and catalogers have completed a 12-month project to catalog 730 historic recordings held primarily in the Dorothy Day-Catholic Worker Collection. Having catalog records improves research access to Marquette’s renowned Catholic social action collections. The new records represent talks, speeches, and interviews with some of the most influential intellectuals and social activists of the late 20th century, including Dorothy Day, Michael Harrington, Daniel Berrigan, John C. Cort, Rabbi Abraham Heschel, and Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. These one-of-a-kind recordings are now also accessible to scholars in the Catholic Research Resources Alliance’s Catholic Portal. The Libraries will soon offer streaming access to these digitized audio recordings.

Building a Campus: the Libraries' newest digital collection documents Marquette’s campus history through through more than 600 photographs, drawings, clippings and programs dating from circa 1900 to the present. The initial launch of the collection features 14 buildings, including the original Marquette College (above), Church of the Gesu, Brooks Memorial Union, McCormick Hall and St. Joan of Arc Chapel. Have you read your colleagues' latest publications? E-Publications @Marquette now holds more than 650 articles, a 450% increase since December 2009. Notable additions are the journal Conversations on Jesuit Higher Education and a new "Working Papers" series for faculty in Economics. The repository has recorded almost 150,000 fulltext downloads to date. More...

In collaboration with English professors Sarah Wadsworth and Angela Sorby, the Libraries have received a program grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities and the American Library Association. Watch for an exciting lineup of events during fall 2011 at Marquette and at the Milwaukee Public Library on Louisa May Alcott, the woman behind Little Women.
