Exporting Marqcat Records into EndNote

The following instructions describe how to take records from the Marquette University Libraries catalog, Marqcat, and export them to a previously existing or newly created EndNote library. You may wish to use this method if you prefer the more powerful searching capabilities of Marqcat as opposed to the limited searching capabilities that EndNote's Z39.50 software offers.

This method is also useful if you are searching Marqcat at a PC that does not have EndNote on it. You can either the download the Marqcat records to a flash drive or e-mail the records to yourself. Later, you can then bring these downloaded or e-mailed Marqcat records to your PC which has EndNote and you can then, "import" these records into an EndNote library.

While in Marqcat, mark the records you wish to export to EndNote. (Note: each item listed below has a box located on the left hand side of the screen. Click in the box of each item you wish to mark.)

IMPORTANT: MAKE SURE to click on the Save Marked Records button (located near the bottom of the screen) BEFORE you go on to the next page of listings! On the following pages of listings, mark any other items you wish to include. Again, REMEMBER to click on the SAVE Marked Records BEFORE you go on to the next page.

When you are finished marking your items, click on the "EXPORT SAVED RECORDS" which now appears at the top of the Marqcat screen.

The following screen will come up which includes the titles of the items which had been marked.

In order to save the records in a format that EndNote will be able to read, click on the End-Note option on the left hand side of the screen.

In order to save the records to a flash drive, click on "Local Disk", on the right hand side of the screen.

After clicking on the SUBMIT button, you will get the following popup screen:

Click on Save, and another pop-up screen will appear:

Change the destination above to your flash drive, by clicking on the black triangle in the "Save In" line and select the drive.

The default name that is given the file is "export.txt." You can change this to whatever file name you wish,

However, make sure that you keep the ".txt" extension.

Click on the Save button to save the records to your floppy in the A: drive.

NOTE: You can also E-mail the records to your e-mail account. To do this, once you have marked your records and have clicked on the Export Records button, at the following screen, click on the E-mail option and then type in your full e-mail address in the box below. Remember to mark the End-Note Format on the left hand side of the screen.

Once you retrieve your e-mail containing the exported Marqcat records, you may be able to save the citations in a text file by clicking on the File option of your e-mail software and then, Save As. You would need to name the file and give it a .txt extension. Example: myfile.txt. If you are not able to save the records in this manner, you could then, select the citations, and copy them into a word processor. In the word processor, you would to save the file as a text file, giving it a name and then a ".txt" extension.

Importing Your Saved Marqcat Records into EndNote

Once you take your downloaded Marqcat records to a PC with EndNote, you should be able to open up your EndNote program and then "import" your saved Marqcat references into a previously existing or newly created EndNote library.

First go into the EndNote program and either open an existing EndNote library or create a new one.

In the following case, a brand new EndNote library is created and the saved Marqcat records will be then imported into this EndNote library.

Click on the File button in the upper left hand side of the screen.

Click on the Import option which is shown in the above window.

The following pop-up window will appear on your screen:

In the above box, click on the "Choose File" button. Locate the file that contains the records that you had downloaded from Marqcat.

Highlight the name of your file and click on the "Open" button.

On the "Import Option" line, change change the selection to "Endnote Import":

At this point, you are now ready to click on the "Import" button on the lower right hand side of the pop-up screen.

The downloaded Marqcat records will now be entered into the EndNote library.
