Manuscript Submission

To Submit or not to Submit:

You do not need to submit your manuscript if you publish in one of the journals listed here.

Otherwise, submit your paper at NIHMS, the NIH Manuscript Submission system. (Log in with your eRA Commons account.)

Instructions for submission, including screen captures, can be found in The NIHMS System User's Guide to Submitting a Manuscript on the NCBI BookShelf. Videos are provided to demonstrate the submission process and manuscript approval. NIH also provides some very good tutorials to guide you through the process.

Information required for submission:

  • PI name and email address
  • Title of the journal
  • Title of the manuscript
  • Grant number(s)
  • Files of the Final Peer-Reviewed Manuscript defined below; the files may be in several formats: Word, Excel, PPT, TIFF, GIF, JPEG, PDF, etc.
  • Embargo/delay time period, if any

Following the Submission:

  • The NIH will convert the deposited files into a standard PMC format and will email the PI to review the PMC-formatted manuscript for any necessary corrections or to approve its release as is.
  • The NIH will automatically send the article to PMC for public posting after the delay specified during submission. You are not responsible for assuring that the full text is released in PMC at the proper time.

Final Manuscript vs. Final Article

Final Peer-Reviewed Manuscript: The investigator's final manuscript of a peer-reviewed article accepted for journal publication, including all modifications made by the author from the peer review process.

Final Published Article: The journal's authoritative copy of the article, including all modifications from the publishing peer review process, copyediting and stylistic edits, and formatting charges.
