Why is this loan Library Use Only?

Loans are designated Library Use Only by the lending institution. We appreciate when an institution is willing to loan materials for our patron use that are of a significant importance to their collection, in fragile condition or valuable (irreplaceable). We MUST honor the lending restrictions of these institutions. The Library Use Only rules are listed below.

  1. LIBRARY USE ONLY materials cannot be removed from the Raynor-Memorial Library.
  2. LIBRARY USE ONLY materials must be signed out before each use.

If you have an assigned research carrel in the Memorial Library, you may obtain permission to keep library use only materials in your carrel. You must contact the Interlibrary Loan office at (414) 288-7257 or email: mumemill@marquette.edu to obtain prior permission. This must be done on a case-by-case basis.

When returning LIBRARY USE ONLY materials to the Raynor Circulation Desk indicate whether additional use of the material is required or sign the “completed” section of the In Library Use Only form.

Why did I receive this article in print?

You received a print copy of the article you requested if:

  1. Copyright Law or the Copyright Holder prohibits electronic distribution.
  2. Questionable text or image quality would not allow for scanning of the article

For articles that cannot be delivered electronically due to copyright prohibitions, Marquette University Interlibrary Loan has paid a copyright fee (usually $25.00-$30.00) to provide a single copy for your personal academic use. Please note:

  1. The copyright law of the United States (Title 17, United States Code) governs the making of photocopies or other reproduction of copyrighted materials. IT IS A VIOLATION OF COPYRIGHT LAW TO DISTRIBUTE OR REPRODUCE THIS MATERIAL ELECTRONICALLY OR IN PAPER FORMAT BEYOND A SINGLE COPY FOR YOUR OWN PERSONAL USE.
  2. If you fail to pick up articles received in print where Marquette University Interlibrary Loan has incurred a copyright fee to provide you with the article, further requests where a copyright fee is required may be cancelled.

Who can use Interlibrary Loan?

Any member of the Marquette University community is eligible to use the ILL service. This includes faculty, full and part time students, administrators and support staff. The service is not available to alumni or to Courtesy Card holders.

What kinds of Materials can I get through Interlibrary Loan?

The ILL department is able to get many different kinds of materials through the various networks utilized. Books, photocopies of articles, videos, sound recordings, microfilm, and microfiche are commonly obtained for the Marquette community.

How much does it cost?

Books and photocopies of articles from periodicals not held in the Marquette collection can usually be obtained at no cost to the user. Most borrowing fees are absorbed by the Libraries.

How much time does it take to get the material?

The ILL user must be sure to allow adequate time for the verification, processing, and delivery time to and from the lending institution. Requests are usually filled within two weeks. Some items may arrive more quickly and some may take longer depending on the nature of the material requested.

How long can I keep the material?

The lending library sets the due date; thus each book received may have a different due date. Generally the loan period is between two and four weeks.

Can I renew Interlibrary Loan books?

ILL books can be renewed if the lending library has not placed a No Renewal restriction on the material. All renewals must be requested on or before the due date. Requests for renewals of overdue items will be denied. Request a renewal through the ILLiad System.

How do I place ILL requests?

Requests are submitted electronically via the ILLiad System.

Where do I pick up and return my ILL material?

All ILL print material can be picked up and returned at the Raynor Memorial Library Circulation Desk located on the 1st floor just inside the turnstiles. Most articles and conference papers are available electronically and can be retrieved via the ILLiad System once they are received.
