Brainteasers

an interview By Joni moths mueller

Every May, Marquette faculty members take time to complete one final task before summer recess. They honor three colleagues whose gift for the art of teaching sets the bar for excellence. The honorees receive the John P. Raynor, S.J., Awards for Teaching Excellence or the Robert and Mary Gettel Award for Teaching Excellence. The awards include a stipend.

They get their kicks teasing ideas out of students and love nothing better than students who question, argue, agree, disagree, test their patience, doubt, analyze, laugh and THINK. Each year since 1959, Marquette faculty have gathered to choose and honor their favorites — teachers within their ranks who exemplify the teacher-scholar model, whose love for their work is obvious, and who don’t let up because if they did, their students would lose.

Meet this year’s winners of the 2005 Faculty Awards for Teaching Excellence:

Dr. Lawrence LeBlanc

Professor of political science, who has been teaching Marquette students about international relations and human rights for 35 years.

Dr. Krista Ratcliffe

Associate professor of English, who developed the first-year English program

Dr. Peter Toumanoff

Associate professor of economics, who pushes his students hard, believing education forms better citizens.
