ON WRITING EFFECTIVELY
Dr. Rebecca Nowacek recalls her own college
sociology professor remarking about a paper she turned in: “You
write like an English major.” The professor’s remark
sparked in Nowacek a curiosity about how students — majoring
in everything from mathematics to electrical engineering to
nursing — express their thoughts, especially
on paper.
That interest has fueled Nowacek’s
career as an assistant professor of English with a focus on
teaching rhetoric and composition. And it was recognized this
year with the extreme honor of being named a Carnegie Scholar
(one of just 21 faculty selected from more than 300 applicants
worldwide) by the Carnegie
Academy for the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning.
Nowacek will be immersed in a series of projects
sponsored by the Carnegie Academy this year to explore interdisciplinary
learning and educational approaches in integrated classrooms.
She is interested in how instructors can effectively design
and coach student writing assignments and then respond to
their students’ final
products in ways that promote learning across disciplines.
