Learning to Read

Diversity Grants support courses, creative outreach and campus guests

Nearly 20 Milwaukee preschoolers are campus regulars thanks to the Reading Acquisition Program, which serves at-risk African-American children. Directed by Dr. Maura Jones Moyle, assistant professor of speech pathology and audiology, and S. Sue Berman, clinical instructor, the program received a 2006-07 Diversity Grant. While the preschoolers get intensive reading help, students get to work with children from linguistically and culturally diverse backgrounds. The children come from local Head Start classrooms.

Grants awarded for building diversity awareness:

The Ralph H. Metcalfe Chair: Drs. Michael Monahan, assistant professor, and Anthony Peressini, associate professor, both philosophy, to bring Dr. Lewis R. Gordon to campus. Gordon directs Temple University’s Institute for the Study of Race and Social Thought.
Excellence in Diversity Grants: Drs. Richard Taylor, associate professor of philosophy, and Irfan Omar, assistant professor of theology, for a symposium on Islamic thought; and Dr. David Krause, director of the Applied Investment Management Program, for AIM.
Curriculum Enhancement Grants: For courses developed by Drs. Howard Fuller, director of the Institute for the Transformation of Learning, and Robert Lowe, professor in the School of Education, on education and the Civil Rights Era; by Dr. Jodi Melamed, assistant professor of English, on literature and race after World War II in Milwaukee and the United States; and by Dr. Marie Hoeger- Bement, assistant professor of physical therapy, and Marnie Vanden Noven, clinical assistant professor, on cultural competence for health care professionals.
