Friday Photo: Freshman is spotlight of talent show

Story and photos by Matthew Bin Han Ong, Comm '12

Behind every revolution is an anthem — written for the voice and more often than not, accompanied by an acoustic guitar. Songwriter Benjamin Wagner did just that, winning his own revolution by a wide margin of applause at Marquette's 2011 Spotlight Talent Show held in the Weasler Auditorium.

"I consider Concert for the Concrete to be almost like a statement song for myself. Basically it is saying that I need to do my own thing and make the most of what I have," says Wagner, who will be performing again at 9 p.m. on Jan. 28 at the Union Sports Annex.

Wagner has been playing the guitar for only about nine months and says he was actually pretty amazed he won the People's Choice award because there were "some really talented performers at the show."

Other contestants who received prizes were Hype Dance (1st student organization), Sullivan Oakley (1st independent), Gold 'N Blues (2nd student organization) and Andrew Pauly and Chris Morales (2nd independent).
