A table set for 280

What does it take to provide traditional Thanksgiving fare for 280? About 40 pounds of ham, 120 pounds of turkey, 60 pounds of stuffing and three gallons of gravy.

The volunteers dishing out that yumminess? Marquette faculty and staff who served Thanksgiving dinner to more than 280 university community members, including many international students, who stayed on campus and celebrated America's favorite food holiday.

In its 63rd year, the dinner — sponsored by Campus Ministry with the help of Sodexho Food Service and the Office of Residence Life — is served in memory of Rev. William McEvoy, S.J. He first provided the dinner for students during the 1950s in the basement of the Dental School building.

Here’s the feast by the numbers:

  •  40 pounds of ham
  • 120 pounds of turkey
  • 50 pounds of mashed potatoes
  • 30 pounds of sweet potatoes
  • 60 pounds of stuffing
  • 3 gallons of gravy
  • 150 slices of pumpkin pie
  • 300 servings of carrot cake

Thanksgiving in Marquette is one of the stories I tell my kids that I now fly over the world just for the weekend!! I tell them how I had to stay at the YMCA and share my thanksgiving with the campus community!! circa 1982. Fond memories!! May God bless you all
