There was a time when college students learned foreign languages this way: put on the headphones, listen and repeat the recorded statement. No more. The students in Colleen Coffey’s Spanish classes make computer-to-computer calls to talk one-on-one to college students at the Pontifica Universidad Javeriana of Cali, Colombia. While Marquette students finesse their Spanish translation and conversation skills, students in Colombia improve their English language proficiency. The result amazes Coffey: “It’s positively impacting the way they’re learning language, but it’s not just foreign language skills. They discuss history, politics — everything that makes us active members of a global community.
