Marquette Moment
Music to our ears
“Music is a liberal art and part of a humanistic education. Bringing Wisconsin’s largest fine arts institution to Marquette seemed a natural collaboration.”
Truth be told, organizers were a little anxious. Such an event had never been held on campus. And no one could say for sure whether students would come to a classical concert, especially on a chilly Thursday evening. Then the pews of Gesu Church began to fill and the aisles to clog and pretty soon there was standing room only.
The historic happening was a first collaboration between Marquette, Gesu Parish and the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra with Resident Conductor Andrew Massey — an evening for musicians, students, educators and enthusiasts.
“Music is a liberal art and part of a humanistic education,” explains Dr. Robert Ashmore, professor emeritus of philosophy and one of the concert organizers. “Bringing Wisconsin’s largest fine arts institution to Marquette seemed a natural collaboration.”
The Office of University Mission and Identity, Alumni Memorial Union, Marquette University Student Government, colleges of Arts and Sciences, Business Administration, Communication and Professional Studies, and Gesu supported the concert.
