For 10 days in late November and early December, a delegation of faculty and administrators from the Beijing Institute of Technology came to town and soaked up everything that Marquette and Milwaukee could offer. From Marquette men’s and women’s basketball games to touring a Harley-Davidson plant, the delegation members maximized every minute of the visit.
But the main purpose of the trip wasn’t tourism. Back in December 2005, Marquette and BIT signed a memorandum of understanding, an agreement between the two institutions of higher learning to work collaboratively to provide educational opportunities for students. The delegation planned this visit to learn more about American higher education systems.
“In China, there has been an explosion of new opportunities in higher education,” explains Dr. Xin Feng, associate professor of electrical and computer engineering at Marquette and alumnus of BIT. “About 10 years ago, I started bringing faculty members back to Beijing to collaborate with their counterpoints at the Beijing Institute of Technology. It has been a wonderful partnership, and we really have a lot to learn from one another.”
Marquette administrators, deans and faculty members led a series of workshops designed to deepen the delegation members’ understanding of organizational structures and policies of American higher education. The workshops covered academic culture, strategic planning, administration of academic and research programs, and more.
