Dr. Kyuil (Kyle) Kim
As Department Chair I would like to welcome you to the Department of Mechanical Engineering
Mechanical engineering has a long tradition at Marquette, with the undergraduate bachelors program being established almost a century ago in 1908. Master’s a doctoral programs were later introduced in 1961 and 1984, respectively.
Mechanical engineering is one of the oldest and broadest based disciplines of engineering, with mechanical engineers being involved in the design of a broad spectrum of devices and machines used in society today. A mechanical engineering education provides one with an excellent background for careers not only in engineering but also in other areas requiring a technical background.
Our department is staffed and equipped to provide students with a broad based mechanical engineering education in the traditional areas of mechanical systems, thermo-fluid systems and manufacturing systems. Programs leading to bachelor of science, master of science, master of engineering and doctor of philosophy degrees in mechanical engineering are currently offered.
Approximately 350 students are enrolled in the bachelors program, with about 50 percent of the junior and seniors being enrolled in the Co-operative Education Program. Total graduate enrollment is about 50 students. The educational and research programs of the department are directed by 16 full-time regular faculty members, who are assisted by about 10 active emeritus, adjunct and research professors. Four of the 16 full-time regular mechanical engineering faculty are fellows of American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME), and another is a fellow of ASM International. A number of faculty have been nationally and internationally recognized.
I invite you to learn more about our undergraduate and graduate programs, our faculty, our research centers, our laboratories and our student activities. We urge you to come visit us and see the many innovative things taking place. We would love to have you as a part of our team.
Kyle Kim, Ph.D, P.E.
