Faber Center Spring Speaker: Growing in Love and Wisdom: Adapting Buddhist Meditation for Christian Prayer
In celebrating the 50th Anniversary of Vatican II, Susan Stabile’s life and work in an interfaith context brings forth the fruitful exchange that Nostra Aetate anticipated. Raised Catholic, she practiced Buddhism for 20-years as an ordained Tibetan Buddhist nun, then returned to Catholicism and was trained to be a spiritual director in the Ignatian tradition. Susan will share aspects of her own spiritual journey, explore how Buddhist practices can enhance Christian meditation, and offer a guided meditation based on her recently published book, Growing in Love and Wisdom: Tibetan Buddhist Sources for Christian Meditation. Candlelight Procession and Mass
On the night of the opening of the Second Vatican Council, an estimated half million youth made pilgrimage to the Vatican in candlelit procession. Pope John XXII gave a spontaneous speech, the discourse of the moon, from his apartment window. On October 11, we gathered for a candlelit procession and Mass to officially begin our celebration of 50 years of Vatican II.
Rev. Francis Wade, S.J. Public Lecture
Reverend Thomas Michel, S.J., the Fall 2012 Chair holder, delivered the Rev. Francis Wade, S.J., Public Lecture on Wednesday, September 19, in the Beaumier Suites of Raynor Libraries. His talk, entitled “A Catholic Priest Among Muslims: What I Have Learned”, may be viewed here.
Religious Pluralism & the Catholic Church (Reading Group)
Manresa for Faculty sponsored a short-term reading and discussiongroup around the topic of religious pluralism in the Beumier Suites of the Raynor Library. Three Vatican II documents were read:
The Declaration on Religious Freedom (9/27) - Suite A
The Decree on Ecumenism (10/4) - Suite C
The Declaration on the Relationship of the Church to Non-Christians (10/11) - Suite A
Working Together against Violence:
The Contribution of Religious Communities to Social Harmony
On November 27, religious leaders from Buddhist, Christian, Hindu, Jewish, Muslim, and Sikh communities from the Milwaukee-Madison area will address the challenges faced in their communities and identify ways to increase mutual cooperation. Panel will be moderated by Rev. Dr. Thomas F. Michel, S.J., the Wade Chair in Theology. Discussion will be from 4-6 pm in Cudahy Hall 001. Reception to Follow. Click here for more information.
