"The Passion of Christ" on display at the Haggerty Museum of Art

MILWAUKEE -- "Jules Claude Ziegler: The Passion of Christ" opens at the Haggerty Museum of Art on Friday, March 19, and runs through Sunday, May 23. The exhibition features 12 paintings that illustrate the events in Christ's life which culminated in his crucifixion, death and resurrection by 19th century French painter, Jules Claude Ziegler.

Geza von Habsburg, independent curator and author, will give the opening lecture at 6 p.m. Friday, March 19, in David A. Straz Jr. Hall, 606 N. 13th St., Room 105. A reception will follow from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the museum. Both events are free and open to the public.

"The Haggerty Museum is pleased to offer this exhibition," said Curtis L. Carter, director of the Haggerty Museum of Art at Marquette University. "The theme of the Passion of Christ is particularly suitable for the Lent and Easter season."

Ziegler studied with J.A.D. Ingres. He is known for his workThe Apotheosis of Religion which decorates the cupola of the Church of the Madeline in Paris. Ziegler's works are found in numerous museum and private collections throughout the United States and Europe.

The exhibition is sponsored in part by the Rojtman Foundation and the Marquette University Women's Council Endowment in honor of the late Rev. John P. Raynor, S.J.
