1. WASPs to discuss World War II service

A discussion about World War II Women Airforce Service Pilots will take place Saturday, Oct. 10, at 2 p.m. at Boswell Book Company, 2559 N. Downer Ave., Milwaukee.

Dr. Katherine Landdeck, oral historian and WASP specialist from Texas Women’s University, will moderate a discussion with two former WASPs: Bernice “Bee” Falk Haydu and Dawn Seymour. Haydu will share some of her letters about life in training and active duty, and Seymour will tell the story of 38 WASPs who died on final approach.

The program is being held in conjunction with the Centennial Celebration of Women at Marquette and the play Censored on Final Approach at the Helfaer Theater.

2. Author Susan Neville to read from her writings

As part of the Centennial Celebration of Women at Marquette, author Susan Neville will read from her non-fiction writings Monday, Oct. 12, at 4 p.m. in AMU 227. Her writings range from visiting Hummer factories and Goth nights for teenagers to studying the painting of religious icons to contemplating our relationship to landscape.

Neville is the author of five works of creative nonfiction: Fabrication: Essays on Making Things and Making Meaning; Iconography: A Writer's Meditation; Sailing the Inland Sea: On Writing, Literature, and Land; Indiana Winter; and Twilight in Arcadia. Her prize-winning collections of short fiction include In the House of Blue Lights, winner of the Richard Sullivan prize and listed as a 'Notable Book' by the Chicago Tribune, and Invention of Flight, winner of the Flannery O'Connor Award for Short Fiction.

A reception and book-signing will follow.

The event is co-sponsored by the Office of Student Development and the Department of English.

3. RSVP today for Terri Mitchell "Lunch and Learn"

Head women’s basketball coach Terri Mitchell will present a “Lunch and Learn” program sponsored by the Centennial Celebration of Women at Marquette. Mitchell will present “Living to Win Big — Making a Difference in the World Around You,” Wednesday, Oct. 14, from noon to 1 p.m. in AMU 163. The event is open to the entire Marquette community and a free box lunch will be provided. RSVP online by today, Oct. 9.

4. Memorial service for Brooke Peters is Monday

A memorial service for Brooke Peters will be held Monday, Oct. 12, from 5:30 p.m. to 6 p.m. in the AMU Chapel of the Holy Family.

Brooke, a valuable member of her CommUNITY Floor in McCormick Hall, died July 20 in an automobile accident. She would have been a sophomore this fall in the College of Health Sciences.

The memorial was planned for during the academic year so that the entire campus community has the opportunity to attend.

5. President of Bradley Foundation is guest for "On the Issues"

Michael Grebe, CEO and president of the Bradley Foundation, will be a guest for On the Issues With Mike Gousha on Tuesday, Oct. 13, from 12:15 p.m. to 1:15 p.m. in Sensenbrenner 325.

Grebe ran one of the nation’s largest law firms, Foley & Lardner, before joining the influential Bradley Foundation as its CEO. He has also long been active politically, overseeing national conventions for the Republican Party.

6. Alverno professor to speak about "Women Changing Economics"

The Center for Global and Economic Studies will host Dr. Zohreh Emami, professor of economics at Alverno College, in honor of the Centennial Celebration of Women at Marquette. Emami will present “Women Changing Economics” Tuesday, Oct. 13, from 2:45 p.m. to 4:15 p.m. at the Wisconsin Club, 900 W. Wisconsin Ave., Milwaukee. Her free program is co-sponsored by Center for Global and Economic Studies and the Marquette Economics Association.

7. Director of Chilean Center for Biomedical Science to speak

The Integrative Neuroscience Research Center will host Dr. Luis Aguayo, director of the Center for Biomedical Science at the University of Concepcion, Chile, to present “Modulation of Glycine-activated Ion Channel Function and Pharmacology by Intracellular Gβγ Signaling.” The lecture will be held Tuesday, Oct. 13, from 3:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. in Schroeder Complex 256.

8. Panel to discuss Hellenistic and Hebraic types of thought

The Seminar on Jewish Roots of Christian Mysticism and The Marquette Scripture Project will present “Hellenistic & Hebraic Types of Thought: A Discussion on Method, History and Theology,” Tuesday, Oct. 13, at 4 p.m. in Raynor Library Beaumier Suite A.

Dr. Steven Long, professor of theology; and associate professors of theology Rev. Thomas Hughson, S.J., Dr. Michel Barnes and Dr. Ralph Del Colle will be presenters.

9. Next book available for Late Night Marquette Book Club

Copies of the next book, The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society, for the Late Night Marquette Book Club Discussion Series are available for free in AMU 121 to the first 30 students. Other students can still participate in the discussion but will need to purchase the book on their own.

The book club is sponsored by Late Night Marquette and the BookMarq once a month, providing students the opportunity to discuss a wide variety of different novels chosen by Marquette faculty and staff. Book Club discussions are facilitated by the faculty or staff member who has chosen the book.

Dr. Ruth McShane, clinical instructor of nursing, has chosen this month’s book and will facilitate the discussion Thursday, Oct. 29, from 9 p.m. to 11 p.m. in the Henke Lounge, AMU. Coffee and light snacks will be provided.

10. Teach For America session scheduled for Monday

An information session about Teach For America will be held Monday, Oct. 12, at 7 p.m. in the Raynor Library Beaumier Suites.

Teach For America is the national corps of recent college graduates and working professionals — of all academic majors, backgrounds and career interests — who commit two years to teach in urban and rural public schools and “become lifelong leaders for expanding educational opportunity for all children.”

11. Best Buddies hosting bake sale next week

The Marquette chapter of Best Buddies will host a bake sale next week, Oct. 12-16, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. under the Raynor Library bridge. Cookies will be sold two for $1 and brownies and bags of puppy chow will be sold for $1 each.

The mission of Best Buddies is to enhance the lives of people with intellectual disabilities by providing opportunities for one-to-one friendships.
