The vision of the Marquette Neighborhood Health Center is to reduce health disparities by delivering quality health care to adults and children in the Milwaukee metropolitan area and to provide clinical education to nursing students.

Mission Statement

Our mission emerges from the mission of Marquette University and the College of Nursing, reflecting commitment to excellence, faith, leadership and service. Moreover, our mission is guided by the Catholic Church’s vision of health care as a continuation of the healing ministry of Jesus Christ. Health care, guided by professional codes of nursing, is based on respect for all persons and their cultures, concern for ethical values, and a holistic approach. We strive to enhance opportunities for education, scholarship and research for nursing faculty and students through using and studying best practices and innovative approaches to nursing care and service delivery.

Approach to Care

The Marquette Neighborhood Health Center is designed as a nurse managed health center, under the auspices of the Marquette University College of Nursing, providing community access to health care services while enhancing educational opportunities for nursing students.

Certified Advanced Practice Registered Nurses provide high quality health care that is evidence-based, ensures individualized approaches and includes a preventive focus. Graduate and undergraduate students participate in client care under faculty supervision. Referral for services, such as specialized medical care, physical therapy, nutrition counseling, emergency care and hospitalization is provided as needed. Physician consultation is available to discuss care management guidelines and to collaborate on individual client plans if the complexity or seriousness of a client’s situation warrants. If admitted to the hospital, a client’s care is managed by a hospitalist (acute care physician specialist) which is commonly done in other primary care practices.

Meet the Practitioners & Staff

All of the Advanced Practice Nurses (Nurse Practitioners or NPs) at MNHC have Wisconsin Advanced Practice Nurse Prescribers (APNP) licenses, which allow them to prescribe medication. They also hold national certification in their specialties, advanced degrees in nursing, Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) licensure, and credentialing with insurances that MNHC accepts.

In addition, MNHC's professional staff (RN and NPs) participate in the educational and clinical experience on Marquette undergraduate and graduate students.

	Margaret Ann "Martty" Berner, MSN, CNM, APNP Martty has been at Marquette University for eight years. She has been involved in nurse-midwifery care, teaching families and students, and consulting about nurse-midwifery care, nationally and internationally, for more than 30 years. She was part of the planning group for MNHC in the fall of 2006 and has been the nurse manager of the center since it opened in April 2007. While the majority of Martty's time is spent as a manager, her Women's Health expertise is used for consultations and occasional client visits.
	Casey Cohn, MSN, FNP, BC, APNP Casey comes to MNHC with experience in episodic care, general and gynecologic oncology, blood disorders, respiratory illnesses, and end-of-life care. As a Family Nurse Practitioner, Casey sees males and females of all ages. She is also a Doctor of Nursing Practice student in Marquette's College of Nursing.
	Kristin Haglund, Ph.D., FNP, PNP, BC, APNP Kristin is certified in Family Practice and Pediatrics and provides care for males and females of all ages. As an Associate Professor in the College of Nursing, she teaches undergraduate and graduate students. Her research is focused around adolescence and sexual abstinence.
	Gloria McGrath, MSN, CPNP, APNP Before joining MNHC in May of 2007, Gloria worked for the Medical College of Wisconsin at Downtown Health Center's Pediatric Primary Care Clinic, Milwaukee's Adolescent Health Program, and Children's Hospital. She is a Pediatric Nurse Practitioner and has wide areas of expertise in the care of children from infants to school age, and adolescence to the age of 21 years. She has guided parents in this community about the health of their children for 30 years.
	Deborah Schwallie, Ph.D., APNP, BC Deborah is an Adult Nurse Practitioner and started with MNHC its first month. She has worked for the Clement J Zablocki Veterans Administration Medical Center in general medicine, Emergency Room care and occupational health. In addition, she has experience in hyperbaric and wound management, community and school health, and mental health. She finished her PhD in nursing at Marquette in 2008 with a dissertation focused on Health Failure. She is also teaching graduate students in the College of Nursing. Deborah sees men and women over 18 years for primary care and minor acute care.
	Patricia "Patti" Sobchak, BSN, RN Patti teaches clients and families about improved nutrition, hypertension and diabetes. She is a graduate of Marquette's College of Nursing. In her 11 years at Marquette, Patti also worked for Student Health Services and has expertise in immunization - including travel vaccines - and allergy medication. Each semester she is a preceptor for Marquette College of Nursing junior and senior nursing students doing their Community Health of Synthesis clinical rotation at MNHC.
