Participate in the Sogang Global Leadership Program this summer
Sogang University, located in the capital city of South Korea, has invited Marquette University students led by communications professor Dr. Scott D'Urso to participate in their summer 2013 Global Leadership Program (GLP). Meet representatives from Sogang University and learn more about the program today, Friday, Feb. 15 at 3 p.m. in the OIE Program Center, Holthusen Hall, 4th floor.
GLP gathers students from 15 Jesuit universities in the U.S. and East Asia including Japan, Taiwan, Indonesia, Thailand and Vietnam. The aim of the program is to foster future global leaders in a modern society through group discussion, fieldwork and presentations on a common theme. This summer’s program will focus on technology and human values. It will be an incredible opportunity to connect with students from across Asia and engage with distinct perspectives on current events and themes. There will be daily lectures, site visits and group discussions. A final presentation will be prepared and given on the last day to conclude the leadership program. Following the formal one-week program, students have the opportunity to participate on a 3-day cultural program visiting sites in Seoul and the surrounding area. This is a great opportunity that can jump start a semester abroad at Sogang University. Combine both programs! For more information on Sogang's semester program, visit our website.

Fullbright Scholar Program for 2014-2015 opens
The catalog of opportunities for the 2014-2015 Fulbright Scholars competition is now available here. The number of STEM-related awards has grown. Two new changes to the Fulbright competition include:
- Restrictions regarding previous Fulbright experiences will no longer be a prohibitive factor in applying for an award. But preference will continue to be given to candidates who have not previously received a Fulbright.
- The Fulbright Program now includes dependent supplements for same-sex domestic partners.
Fulbright programs offer U.S. faculty, administrators and professionals grants to lecture, participate in seminars, or conduct research in a wide variety of academic and professional fields. Last year, four Marquette faculty members, one graduate student and one undergraduate received Fulbright awards for the 2012–13 academic year. Read about their studies here.

Technology's impact on study abroad
Robert Huesca, a professor of communication at Trinity University in San Antonio, noted the different effects social media has on students while studying abroad in a recent article. While he felt most students rely too heavily on technology while being abroad, he also recalled his abroad experiences as a student: “when I volunteered in Africa…the one volunteer who expressed a distressed level of isolation and homesickness also brought the fewest communication technologies and had no personal mobile phone with which to call family members and friends.” Everything in moderation is always good, and technology is no exception.
Marquette student Kathleen Ryan, who studied abroad in Ireland last year, found that having a laptop was great to keep in touch with her family. “It was nice because we could Skype to say “hi”, and I would always email my mom when I traveled to let her know I was safe,” Ryan said. “But that’s pretty much all I used technology for… it was nice to just walk around town without worrying about texting or calling anyone, it was all about finding a balance.” While it’s nice to share experiences with people back home, putting the phone and laptop away for an afternoon or entire weekend truly allows students to soak up the new country they’re in.
