Alumnus of the year

"Alumnus of the Year" awarded to international student Dr. Henry K.H. Kwan, Arts ’71.

Notable for his contributions to developing such medications as Claritin, Claritin D-24, Intron A and Nasonex, pharmaceutical executive-turned-scientific consultant Henry modestly deflects accolades and insists that he is merely Marquette’s luckiest alumnus.

“I’m enjoying the sixth lap of a one-mile race,” he says of his second career lending his expertise to pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies. “Most people would be lucky to even cross the finish line, but I basically got two more laps.” Henry particularly relishes serving as a scientific expert in intellectual property litigation cases. “I get to take on the assignments I believe in and speak from my heart,” either defending patents or helping generic drug makers elbow patents out of their way.

At 17, Henry was finishing his second-to-last year of high school in his native Hong Kong when his father decided the local political and economic climates were becoming uncomfortably risky. He insisted that Henry pick an American college and apply to go that very fall. Read more.

The largest student-led social responsibility movement in the world: Global Brigades

Learn about Marquette Global Brigades!

Sarah Hehemann is a current senior at Marquette University studying nursing. On January 16, 2017 she returned home from her third and final Marquette Global Brigades experience. During Hehemann’s undergraduate career, she took multiple trips to Nicaragua and participated in the 9-day volunteer program.

Global Brigades is a non-profit organization that provides sustainable and lasting societal improvements where there is limited access to health care in countries including Nicaragua, Honduras and Panama. The program was founded at Marquette University in 2003 by Jeff Bodle, Bus AD ‘04 and Shital Chauhan, H Sci ‘04. Today it has grown to be the world’s largest student-run organization, recruiting volunteers from over 450 universities across the globe. During a brigade, volunteers have an opportunity to shadow licensed doctors and practice basic health care, all while using their Spanish communication skills in a global environment.

Sarah was drawn to Global Brigades because of its multifaceted incorporation of her fields of interests. “I was looking for a way to combine my passion for medicine and health care with my love for volunteering. I love to share my learned skills and knowledge with others and, in turn, learn much more from them regarding their way of life, culture, beliefs and values,” Hehemann said.

For the recent January 2017 brigade, volunteers raised over $151,750. Sarah served on the leadership team, and led over 60 Marquette students on a medical, dental, public health and water brigade. Continue Reading.
