Marquette Hosts South African Sister City Delegation

 

On Tuesday, April 29th, Marquette University, under the sponsorship of Dr. Keenan Grenell, Associate Provost for Diversity, hosted Milwaukee’s newest sister city delegation.  Eighteen representatives, including Mayor AZ Mnqayi, from the city of uMhlatze in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa were hosted for lunch to learn more about MU. Specifically featured during the lunch was Marquette’s South Africa Service-Learning program in Cape Town and plans for a Discovery Center in the College of Engineering. Also, during a reception at Discovery World on Tuesday evening, Alderman Joe Davis was acknowledged for his instrumental work with Consul General Yosef Omar in realizing the sister city agreement. Mayor Tom Barrett will sign the official sister city agreement today at City Hall.

India McCanse Appointed Academic Director for South Africa Service Learning Program

 

India McCanse, a Dialogue Coordinator in the Law School’s Restorative Justice Initiative, has been named the Academic Director for the South Africa Service Learning Program for the 2009 academic year.  In that capacity, McCanse has previously been President and CEO of the Big Brothers & Sisters of Metro Milwaukee and the Executive Director of the Counseling Center of Milwaukee. In total, she has 25 years of non-profit experience. She also has a master’s degree in educational psychology from the University of Missouri and is currently pursuing a master’s degree in divinity.

Jesuit Universities in the Western Hemisphere Meet To Discuss Global Initiatives

 

The deans from the 28 Jesuit universities in North America (AJCU) and the 29 Jesuit universities in Central and South America (AUSJAL) met in conjunction with JesuitNET and representatives of the MESSINA Project at the University of Central America (UCA) in San Salvador, El Salvador from March 12-15, 2008.  The group continued collaborative discussions and course sharing that began five years ago at a joint meeting at ITESO Technology Institute in Guadalajara, Mexico and also two years ago at the UCA in Managua, Nicaragua.  The goal of these meetings is to extend Jesuit education - especially courses on human rights and the eradication of poverty - throughout the Western hemisphere via web-based learning programs.  The long range goal of developing a global, virtual Jesuit university was also addressed.

Dr. Bob Deahl, the dean of the College of Professional Studies has attended each of these meetings and while in San Salvador was able to visit the Marquette students who are participating in the CASA program that is run out of Santa Clara university.  Bob and the deans and participants of the meeting also visited the Fe y Alegria school in San Salvador as well as the sites commemorating the assassination of Archbishop Romero and the execution in 1989.

New International Course Offerings

 

In Fall 2008, Marquette will offer two new courses with an international component.  The first is SOWJ 198 section 1701: Community Organizing and will be sponsored by The Marquette Initiative for Human Rights.  Students in this course will learn how to create grassroots organization to promote human rights and social justice. The instructor is Bob Connolly, a veteran community organizer trained by the Industrial Areas Foundation.

 

The second course, ARSC 2: Cross-Cultural Issues in Study Abroad, is a one credit course designed specifically for students who are planning to study and intern abroad as a component of their college career. The course prepares students for the challenges involved with cross-cultural interactions and the acculturation process. It will be taught by Terence Miller, Director of the Office of International Education.

Leading Indian Human Rights Advocate Visits MU Campus

 

On Wednesday, March 19th, Father Cedric Prakash, a leading human rights advocate in India, visited Marquette’s campus.  Among his many responsibilities, Fr. Paraksh is the director of “Prashant” – a center for human rights, justice and peace; is coordinator of the Province for Integral Social Development; is the spokesperson for the United Christian Forum for Human Rights in the Gujarat province of India; and is a liaison for the Local Capacities for Peace Project out of Harvard University.

 

With an itinerary organized by MU professor Fr. Philip J. Rossi, Fr. Prakash met with a number of administrators and faculty members, including Terry Miller, Michael Duffey, Barry McCormick, William Thorn, John Pauly and Irfan Omar.  Fr. Parkash’s visit helped to reinforce Marquette’s strong relationships in India, coming on the heels of the University’s recent partnership agreement with St. Xavier’s College in Ahmedabad.

Conversation Café Schedule

 

OIE will be hosting a Conversation Café every Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday from 8-9pm in the OIE Program Center (407 AMU) beginning on Tuesday, March 4 until May 1. 

Hosted by a native or near-native English speaker, the Conversation Café offers ESL students the opportunity to practice their conversation skills and learn about American culture in a relaxed and supportive social atmosphere while they also share information about their own cultures.  For more information on the Conversation Café, please contact Jean Czaja at jean.czaja@marquette.edu. (Please note that the Café will be closed during the Spring & Easter Holiday.)

Writing Center Available for International Students

 

The Ott Memorial Writing Center offers free one-to-one tutoring to all Marquette students on all kinds of writing projects.  Most appointments last about 45 minutes to an hour.  Bring a copy of the assignment, your notes, your ideas and a draft (if you have already written it) so that the tutors in the Writing Center can provide you with the best assistance.  Call 288-5542 to schedule an appointment.  The Center is open 9am-5pm during the semester and some weekend and evening hours.  For more information visit: www.marquette.edu/writingcenter

Marquette Ranks Among Top Producers of Peace Corps Volunteers

In a recent list compiled by the Peace Corps and published in the Chronicle of Higher Education, Marquette ranked as one of the top producers of Peace Corps volunteers among medium-sized college and universities. At 16 on the list, Marquette sent 24 students to the Peace Corps in 2007. Among Jesuit institutions, only Georgetown, Boston College and Gonzaga came in higher.

Professor from Sogang University in South Korea Visits Marquette

On Tuesday, January 22nd, Dr. Hyeonsik Michael Cheong, Director of International & Public       Relations for Sogang University in South Korea, visited Marquette’s campus. While at Marquette he met with staff members from the Office of International Education. They discussed increasing faculty and student exchanges, as well as undergraduate student recruitment, in South Korea. Dr. Cheong also met with Dr. David Shrock, the interim provost, Dr. Ruth Howes, the head of the physics department, and Dr. Chae Yi, a professor in the chemistry department who has been active doing collaborative research in South Korea.

Marquette Business Students Travel to India

From Jan. 2nd to the 13th, 2 faculty members, 8 MBA students, and 2 undergraduate students traveled to India for a course on offshore outsourcing. Led by Dr. Monica Adya and Dr. Craig Struble, the group spent time in New Delhi and Hyderabad. While there, they visited a number of companies, including Microsoft, HCL, Qualcomm, and Satyam. The group also met with students and faculty members from the Jaypee Institute of Technology and the Indian School of Business. Organized by Dr. Adya and Dr. Kate Kaiser, this course will be offered again in the future.
