Communication and Media FAQs

Q: How do I publicize an event that my department or organization is sponsoring?
A:

We can assist you with everything from a campus News Brief to a full-scale communication strategy for your event, depending on the subject matter and timing.

All events publicized through the Office of Marketing and Communication must be officially approved by either an academic department or a student organization recognized by the Office of Student Development.

Q: How do I get an item in News Briefs or on CheckMarq?
A:

E-mail Tim Olsen, our communication manager, or call him at 288-6712. Events must be officially approved by an academic department or the Office of Student Development.

News Briefs is published late Monday and early Thursday afternoons; additional e-mail notices are sent as needed. CheckMarq is updated regularly.

Q: Do you offer writing services?
A: We have professional news and public relations writers who offer writing services for press and news releases.

Q: How else can I generate publicity on campus?
A:

With enough notice, we can assist with the preparation of posters, flyers, banners and other materials to support your event.

You can also contact the Marquette Tribune, the student newspaper, MUTV and/or MU Radio.

Q: How do I let newspapers and TV and radio stations know about an event or program?
A:

Call or e-mail a member of our media relations staff: Andy Brodzeller, 288-0286; or Brigid Miller, 288-7445.

Because we work with the media every day, we're happy to discuss media coverage possibilities with you. Keep in mind that timing, other local and world events, degree of audience interest - and, for television, visual impact - all influence whether or not the media will cover a particular event.

Q: Which media do you contact?
A: We work daily with local broadcast stations and newspapers, including the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel and Milwaukee Business Journal, as well as magazines serving southeast Wisconsin. If appropriate, we also have an extensive list of regional and national contacts.

Q: When should I notify you about an event?
A: Whether publicizing an event on campus or to a broader audience, please contact the Office of Marketing and Communication as soon as possible at 288-7448. Many newspapers publish only weekly, so at least two weeks' advance notice is necessary.

Q: I want to publicize my event. What do you need from me?
A: The more detail you provide, the easier it is for us to help you. At a minimum, we need to know who, what, when, where and why something is important, as well as contact information for the individual who can provide further information.

Q: What if a reporter calls me?
A:

Faculty and staff members are encouraged to offer opinions in their fields of expertise. The Source, Marquette's media guide and experts' directory, directly links reporters to Marquette personnel.

Our communication team can help you prepare for an interview by arranging location, clearing media parking and even anticipating questions.

If you receive a call from the media on a topic and you do not wish to comment, refer the call to the communication team at 288-7448.

Either way, letting us know that you have been interviewed is helpful to us, as we track media coverage daily.

Q: How can I get a copy of The Source, Marquette's media guide and experts' directory?
A: Call the Office of Marketing and Communication at (414) 288-7448.

Q: What should I do if I see media filming on campus or talking to students?
A: All media on campus should be cleared through the Office of Marketing and Communication. Call us at 288-7448 if you are unsure if a Marquette staff member is accompanying a television crew.

Q: How can I get a Campus Directory?
A: Call the Office of Marketing and Communication at 288-7448. The Campus Directory is intended for on-campus use by university employees only. You can also view our online phonebook for faculty and staff.
