Durben named executive director of Marquette’s Office of Research and Sponsored Programs
Katherine Durben has been appointed executive director of Marquette University’s Office of Research and Sponsored Programs.
Durben joined the Office of Research and Sponsored Programs at Marquette in 1996 and has been serving as the director of project planning and development since 2000. In that role, she has worked with faculty and administrators campus-wide to explore their research/scholarship interests and identify opportunities for external funding. In 2002, she established the “Conversations About…” series to help bring together faculty with common research interests.
As executive director, Durben will provide oversight for all areas of operation, including the office’s role in technology transfer and commercialization. She will focus specifically on developing benchmarking data that can be used in strategic planning for research growth, assessing the national landscape to determine new opportunities for research funding and assisting with the development of research efforts that involve internal and external collaborators.
Durben has more than 20 years of experience in extramural funding and grant administration. Prior to coming to Marquette, she worked for Lutheran Social Services in Milwaukee. Durben earned her bachelor’s degree from UW-Stevens Point and a master’s in social work from UW-Milwaukee.
In fiscal year 2011, the Office of Research and Sponsored Programs helped administer 188 awards totaling $26.49 million for research, instruction and other projects and assisted 159 Marquette faculty and administrators with the submission of 352 applications for external funding.
