Clash of media and war is topic of conference at Marquette

Reps from 14 countries will discuss at 'Media, War and Conflict'

Released: April 9, 2007

The tenets of a free press and those of national security often conflict during wartime. Marquette University on April 19-20 will host representatives from 14 countries who will discuss and debate the relationships among news coverage, global conflict and war.

The panels will tackle such topics as “Delusions of Peace: Why America Was Unprepared to Address the Ideological Dimensions of the War on Terror,” “To Report or Not to Report: Freedom of Expression and War Reporting” and “Journalism During Terror Attacks.” Conference participants are coming from Australia, Denmark, Egypt, Germany, Great Britain, Ireland, Israel, the Netherlands, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland and Zimbabwe, as well as the United States.

A dinnertime keynote address will be given at 7 p.m., Thursday, April 19, by Baltimore Sun television critic David Zurawik.

The conference will also launch a new scholarly journal, “Media, War and Conflict.” The journal, which is the first scholarly publication dedicated solely to this field, will map the shifting arena of war, conflict and terrorism in an increasingly mediated age. A selection of papers from the conference will be included in the journal’s early issues, the first of which is slated for April 2008.

Sponsored by the J. William and Mary Diederich College of Communication, the “Media, War and Conflict” conference was planned by Philip Seib, Lucius W. Nieman Professor of Journalism at Marquette University. Seib is also a prolific author and veteran print and television journalist.
